Tanzania Development Trust

How we select projects

TDT is only a small Trust and we do not have enough money for all the applications we receive. Some projects we fund or part fund quickly. Some projects have to wait for funding. Some we propose to partner Trusts, and of these several are successful every year. To some projects we have to say ‘No, sorry, we can’t help you’. Below are some of the factors that affect the committee’s decisions:

  • Fully completed applications that are within our Guidelines. See How to apply to TDT.
  • Projects that are not too big. There is no point in applying to TDT for a grant of more than 26M Tsh (£12,000). We might (but only rarely) make a grant of that size over 2 years. Most of our grants are not above 8.6M Tsh (£4000).
  • Factors which increase a project’s chance of success:

a. Strong evidence of sustainability and local participation

b. Considerable benefit to the local community

c. Where there is a partner NGO, whether Tanzanian or from the UK or USA etc.

d. Where there are not other powerful backers

e. Where we can increase our ‘spread’ of projects: we want a good mix of agriculture, health, water, education, business start-up etc. and a good ‘spread’ of regions of Tanzania.

f. Where we can monitor the success of the project and get good feed-back and reports.

g. Where BTS individual or group members are involved.
