The Youth for Social Development (Y4SED) group in Miyuji, a suburb of Dodoma, was founded by four young university graduates. The aim is to train young people, a mix of primary and secondary school leavers, in entrepreneurship by developing new edible products for the growing middleclass market in Dodoma. They are already producing and selling honey, packaged biscuits and pumpkin powder.
There are 40 beneficiaries, all under the age of 25. The majority are earning between 40,000 and 60,000 shillings each month, an important contribution to their family incomes. TDT’s grant enables Y4SED to offer more young people training in business planning, marketing, product development and skills such as bee keeping.
Project Officer, Kevin Curley, met the leaders and members of Y4SED in February 2018. He stated that the group was ‘remarkable’ due to their young age. This was the first time he had met an organisation entirely led by young people.
